Surfer, explorer, and environmental advocate Anna Gudauskas is drawn to the raw beauty of cold-water surf, pursuing waves in remote, frigid destinations that lie well beyond the usual tropical lineup.
“It’s easier to motivate getting outdoors and living fully when the days are sunny and long, but it takes a little more commitment when temps drop. Resting a digging into a couple books is always nice, but I know I’m always happier after getting outside and moving my body. Living brightly feels to me like embracing and honing in on your joy. Whether that’s a sunrise hike with your dog, and evening yoga class or gathering around food with people you love.”
“Some of my favorite trips have been to the cold, like Alaska, Russia and Iceland. I love the silver colors in the ocean and the opportunity to feel humbled by the elements. I grew up in such a tame climate and now I have so much respect for real weather. It’s awe inspiring to feel so small and alone surrounded by the power of nature. This was my 6th trip to Iceland and I came back so inspired by the die hard and close knit surfing community. This is the first generation of surfers there and they have been responsible for finding and figuring out all the surf spots. It’s exciting to feel on the frontier on surf discovery like that! Not to mention how incredible the waves are. Some of the setups look like the left points in Chile… you just need a little more neoprene and willpower, but the reward is indescribable.”
Through Anna’s lens, even the iciest coastlines carry the warmth of summer. Her fearless pursuit of cold-water waves shows us that the spirit of sunshine, adventure, and joy doesn’t fade with the seasons — it simply shifts, finding new ways to shine against winter skies.
